The City of Hemphill and part of San Augustine and Shelby Counties hopefully will soon be designated by the United States government as economic "opportunity zones" that allow businesses to re-invest in low-income communities in order to receive a tax break.
Hemphill Police Chief Roger McBride gave a monthly activity report during the April city council meeting. McBride went on to say that animal calls had increased, along with complaints at the Dixie League Field.

A Sabine County grand jury has indicted a man accused of being a part of an international tractor theft ring that allegedly made off with a Hemphill man's tractor and other farm implements worth more than $30,000.
Six Mile Volunteer Fire Department was called to 118 Toledo Hills, off of FM 2928 at approximately 1 p.m. after neighbors reported a house fire. Firefighters arrived to find the wood frame home completely engulfed in flames.
