NEWTON COUNTY, Texas
The Department of Public Safety in reporting that one person has died following a fiery head-on collision in Newton County early Saturday, July 13.
According to 12newsnow.com the crash occurred on Highway 87 South, just north of the Bleakwood community at approximately 2:45 a.m.
Texas Department of Public Safety Sgt. Stephanie Davis issued a release stating that a 2012 Chevrolet pickup truck was traveling northbound on Highway 87 and crossed the center line, hitting a 1996 Chevrolet sedan headed southbound, troopers said. Then, the Chevrolet sedan caught fire and became engulfed in flames.
Troopers have not yet determined why the truck veered into oncoming traffic, Davis said. Justice of the Peace Connie Smith pronounced the driver of the Chervolet sedan dead at the crash scene, Davis said.
"At this time, the deceased victim has not been identified due to the extent of the fire," Davis said.
The driver of the pickup, a 24-year-old man from Kirbyville was taken to Christus St. Elizabeth's hospital in Beaumont with serious injuries.
"Due to the seriousness of his injuries, his name will not be released until the next of kin has been notified," Davis said.
The accident is being investigated by the Department of Public Safety. No other information is available at this time.
