Sheriff Sam Craft of the Vernon Parish Sheriff’s Office would like to remind citizens that it is vitally important that you begin storm preparations now.
As many of you are aware, there is the POTENTIAL for a tropical storm or category 1 hurricane, towards the end of the week. Citizens should closely monitor local media outlets for weather updates . Citizens should prepare NOW to ensure they are storm ready. Being prepared can sometimes be the difference between life and death.
HURRICANE PREPAREDNESS TIPS
Make sure your vehicles have adequate fuel.
Battery operated radios and flashlights with extra batteries
Toiletry items, diapers, sanitary wipes, paper towels, toilet paper, feminine hygiene items and First Aid Kit
PRESCRIPTION MEDICATIONS – 3 days worth AT LEAST
Small suitcase or backpack with AT LEAST 2 changes of clothes
Place all important documents in waterproof plastic bags. Gather any needed telephone numbers NOW and place them in a water proof plastic bag.
Stock up on bottled water, snacks, and non perishable food items. Manual can opener, paper plates, plastic eating utensils
Collect extra water in large containers to flush toilets Secure outdoor items such as trash cans, patio furniture, trampolines, etc.
DO NOT leave any pet or animal in a pen, trailer, or tied. Make other arrangements for your animals NOW. Ensure you have adequate food for your pet or animals.
Perform maintenance on home generators NOW. Purchase extra fuel NOW. Ensure that fuel storage containers are appropriate to hold gasoline and other flammable liquids. Cell phone chargers for your vehicle
** Monitor the well-being of elderly or handicapped neighbors and loved ones – know their emergency plan. Avoid unnecessary travel on area roadways ~ DO NOT attempt to drive through high water.
Sand bags will be made available at the Vernon Parish Police Jury Barn on Hwy 28 if they are needed for residences in low lying areas.
